Parents and teachers are most effective when they work together to help children become proficient readers. How can parents promote reading ?
* Show your children that reading is important by letting them see you enjoy reading. Read newpapers, magazines, books, labels, billboards, maps, and street signs. Talk to your children about what you are reading. * Read to your children regularly. Establish a time of day when this works well for you. Turn off the TV. Involve your child in choosing what you read. Build on your child's interests when you choose reading material. * Include your child in activities that involve reading. Directions for model building, recipes for cookie baking, a book with interesting facts about a bird's nest your child has discovered are all ripe opportunities for promoting your child's enthusiasm and confidence in reading. * Write notes to your child and have your child write back to you. * Listen to your child read orally. If your child has become an independent reader and isn't interested in reading to you, talk about what is being read. Relate what your child says to a personal experience you've had. Question the motivation of the characters in the story. Help your child sustain interest in reading by showing your interest in the story. *Celebrate your child's interest and enjoyment in reading. Let the child know how much you value the reading experience.
