The second grade class is a class of diverse learners. Literacy is a strong component integrated into all of our subject areas. Students are involved with a Guided Reading Program which works with the students instructional level of reading. Along with this is our Basal Reading program.
The Science program incorporates a variety of topics for second grade. Some of those topics include weather,  insects, the human body, and the study of life cycles and habitats..
One of the first projects the second graders work on in the Fall is the study of Monarch butterflies. We follow the stages from the egg to the emerging of the monarch from the chrysalis. The students have the opportunity to care for the caterpillars through all the stages with hands-on-activities, observations and reflections. The final activity is the Monarch Celebration. This is the letting go of the monarchs for their migration to Mexico.
We also

have a Science table in the classroom which changes every month. Different items are displayed (shells, skulls/bones of different animals, rocks, nests etc}. The students have a chance to add to this table with interesting items that they may find. This provides students with more opportunities for observation and reflection.
Within our Science programs we have worked with the Raptor Center introducing students to raptors, their habitat, their adaptations and the rehabilitation they receive at the Raptor Centerr.
We include writing as an integral part of all the subject areas. Students gain experience with different forms of writing through reflections in science journals, answering Math Messages in their Math journals, and through daily writing in their writing journals. Students publish their writing from their writing journals by using the lap-top computers provided by our school.
