Homework reinforces concepts we are learning during the day. It is your child’s opportunity to show you what they have been learning. My hope is that homework should be easy for your child as we will have covered the concepts in class before it is sent home. From time to time your child maybe be confused about the concepts even if we have covered them. Help them try to do as much of the work as they can. Please write a short note to me if you feel that your child is struggling excessively.
Homework Expectation Reading Your child should be reading a book of their choice every night for 10-15 minutes in the fall, even weekends. By mid- year, the reading time should increase to about 20 - 30 minutes outside of school time.
Spelling A spelling list of 20 words will come home on most Mondays. The last two words on the list are challenge words and students may choose not to try them on the Friday test.
Your child should use 10 of the words in sentences on Monday as homework and return them to school on Tuesday. Your child should continue to practice the words every night for the rest of the week. We have modeled different ways to practice the words in class to prepare the students for this task.
Students will not have to take the final spelling test on Fridays if they get the first 18 words correct on Monday.
Math
Math homework will be sent home at least two days a week. Most nights it will be double sided. The concepts will be ones we have covered during the week. Your child will be encouraged to borrow a Student Reference Book from the classroom to help them look up concepts if they have forgotten how to do the page. Please be sure that both the homework and the reference book are returned every day to school.
Incomplete work
Your child may bring home additional work if they do not get class work done in a timely manner. Students are given time to complete class work in school and as long as they are using their time wisely they should be able to complete the work at school, if not, it may be sent home to be completed and returned.
Day of the Week Possible Types of home work Monday Reading & Spelling- 10 words in sentences Tuesday Reading & Math homework Wednesday Reading & Math or spelling Thursday Reading & Math or Writing Friday Independent Reading Saturday & Sunday Independent Reading
