| | | | | English Language Learners (ELL) | | Welcome to the Galtier ELL web page! We are proud to have more than 70 students speaking 13 different languages. Ours students come from Asia, Africa, and North and South America, Europe, the Carribean, the the Pacific Islands. We are privileged to have such a diverse community of learners.
The goal of the ELL department of Saint Paul Public Schools and Galtier Magnet Elementary is to promote a strong foundation for academic achievement and English language proficiency to English Language Learners.
At Galtier, ELL services are delivered through a collaboration between the ELL and classroom teaching staff during | | First Graders and volunteers listen to a mini-lesson | Language Arts. In this model, English language learners and mainstream learners are divided by grade and reading level among all support and mainstream staff in order to provide Language Arts instruction at appropriate reading levels.
Groups are flexible and change based on results of regular assessments. ELL teachers use second language techniques to best serve the ELL students in Language Arts as the primary reading instructor. District curriculum, school curriculum, and ELL curriculum may be blended to provide extensive ELL service during Language Arts. All learners attend the same type of class at the same time.

What is ELL? The English Language Learner (ELL) program is designed for students whose first language at home is not English. Students are assisted in language development, particularly in listening and reading comprehension, and language production (speaking and writing). Galtier has two full-time ELL teachers. Ms. Hennessy teaches Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grades. Ms. Stanghelle teaches Kindergarten, First, and Sixth Grades. We also are privileged to have Ms. Her as our full-time Hmong bilingual Educational Assistant. |
